Against the Grain Outdoors is a small wood business owned and created by Andrew and myself (Shannon). We are not only business partners but life partners as well. We live in the small town of Lanark Ontario with our dog cooper.
We opened Against the Grain in March 2021 and it as took off beyond our imagination. It all started when Andrew stumbled upon a video of someone woodcarving on YouTube. A thought crossed his mind where said to himself maybe I should try that. With work being slower at our usual construction job Andrew decided to pick up his chainsaw and give it a shot. He began to carve his first bear… and well needless to say this is where we ended up.
Andrew is our chainsaw artist and the one that ensures everything is done to a high standard! He is the hands on part of the team! Shannon is the person that answers all your questions, takes care of all social media and schedules projects to get done ! Also the one you are more likely to see at the markets! We work together to ensure your vision is brought to life!
Carvings
We love a challenge, no carving can be too big! We offer on-site carvings where the carving will be completed on a tree at your location. Or we can customize a carving of your choice to pick up locally.
Milling
Customized live edge or dimensional lumber orders to your needs. Mobile bandsaw milling that can mill up to 22″ round and 16′ long. Our chainsaw mill can mill up to 37″ round and unlimited length. Please note prices vary depending on location.
CNC Projects
Looking for that perfect addition to your home or outdoor decor? We got you covered! We create anything from personalized signs, charcuterie boards, serving trays, cutting boards and much more all made with our CNC machine!
The Baird trail in Lanark Highlands is .8 km in a circular route, and is one of the most beautiful trails around. Various points are marked with ecological values and one can find the most humungous individual maple and beech trees in the area. Old rail fences indicate farming practices of long ago and the forty year old red pine plantations under a Lanark County Forest Agreement provide a quiet sanctuary from the outside world. A sedge wetland in the middle of the property is halved by a fine boardwalk, affording a good view of typical wetland attributes.
To find this trail, travel west on Wolf Grove Road (County Road16) from Almonte to Middleville and then south on County Road 8. There is a sign marking the park and trail and the property number is 1024. You can also reach the same place by travelling north on highway 511 from Lanark Village to County Road 8, turn east (right) and find 1024. Drive into the parking area and next to it you will find a picnic area and clean washrooms.
The information board in front of the parking lot tells the history of the property and points to the start of the trail. Right after the boardwalk, the trail is not too well marked. Information provided by the mvfn website.
